To Age-in-place is to Flourish-in-place

When I first came across the term "age-in-place" I was doing research to help my parents in making their home into an elderly-friendly home. I was happy to find the term for it, however, the term "age-in-place" gave me an image of this older person turning gray and bending over sitting on a rock.

But that is not what I wanted for my parents. They were not that old and i see many more years of active living between them, and these should be some of the best years in their lives after many years of working and saving, now it's time to enjoy their reward. I am sure that they are looking forward to their golf games, playing host to their grandchildren, having their regular kakis over for mahjong and Karaoke session. I actually wanted to create a place where they can be safe, stay engaged, and independent as long as possible.
I want them to flourish-in-place!
I want a home that will see my parents through as they blossom in their retirement years. Something that will work for them today and will still enable them to live well tomorrow. it has to be safe, with bathrooms that feel secure for feet that are less sensitive, a kitchen that requires less bending and makes the effort of cooking to the minimum. a living room that provides ample space to accommodate friends so they continue to be socially active. A home that is more streamlined, and easy to clean. and as their need changes, small modifications can be made or added on to cater to new needs.

However, I very quickly realized that many a time, the local renovation industry focuses more on the aesthetic value with a very short-term view in terms of functionality and practicality.

Fortunately, i also discovered that much research and studies have already been done to cater to the need of an aging population, in order to age well you not only need to cover only the physical needs of an older person but as well as his/her psychological and social needs.

Seeing how these Age-in-place features can help in making life easier for a big part of the Singapore population, I then took courses in Universal Design from the Unversity of Buffalo, and also became a Certified Age-in-place Specialist by taking a course offered by the National Association of Home Builders in the USA.
